Protecting your Identity while traveling

Passports and ID’s

Take out most credit cards that you won’t need while traveling. Photo copy your cards that you do take with you and store in a separate place in case you lose them. Take a photocopy of your passport and store that copy separately as well. If asked for your ID while traveling for hotel check-in or renting equipment, show your passport instead of your Driver’s license. Your passport does not have your home address on it.

Your home

Stop newspaper and mail delivery while you are gone or have a neighbor collect daily for you.

Parking at the airport or cruise terminal

Lock the glove compartment or take any documents out of your car that link to your home address. Cars left for several days in a lot are easy targets for home invasions. If renting a car, take the agreement with you and lock in the hotel safe.

Using the hotel safe

Lock extra money, jewelry, passports, car and home keys, plane tickets and your trip itinerary. Anything that gives information about your home, your vehicle, or your travel plans should not be left out in the open.

Web Connections

Don’t announce your travel plans on social media ahead of time. When connecting to the internet on public wi-fi, do not go into your financial accounts or websites with sensitive information. Use the latest password protection and encryption software. Back up your photos in case your phone or computer gets lost or stolen. Password protect these devices as well. Install an app that lets you track your phone in case someone finds it, may also be a good idea.
